Indian Head Massage

The Indian head massage is an ancient therapeutic practice used in India for over 2,000 years, (since around 600 B.C). It is part of the practice of medicine called Ayurveda, which aims to promote long life and balance the body's energies. It is an extremely effective therapy that has evolved from traditional techniques which involves massage to the upper back, shoulders, upper arms, face, neck and scalp, with the client remaining seated in an upright position. The neck and shoulders carry a lot of stress and tension in these muscle groups so massage can help release this and the circulatory and lymphatic system improves, toxins are dispersed, and flexibility restored.

This tradition is still carried out in modern India. Indian Massage is based on the ancient Ayurvedic healing system using the upper chakras. The head more than any other part of our body, represents who we are. It is the centre of our nervous system and home to our identity and intelligence. The Chakra at the top of our head (Crown Chakra) is the one we use to communicate with our higher self. If our head feels good, we feel good.

The Indian Head massage routine

The client will sit comfortable upright in a chair, ideally wearing a vest top or fitted body towel to just leave the neck and shoulders exposed. Treatment tends to begin with a shoulder and neck massage and the head is awakened with the scalp being squeezed, rubbed, gently tapped and prodded, with the hair being tussled and finely combed. Pressure points are worked on and acupressure points to relieve pressure, stimulate circulation and increase alertness. As the massage proceeds the client will become more relaxed and the breathing will become deeper and slower, supporting the release of supressed emotions & negative energy, making way for positive feelings. It is both a subtle and deep massage which leaves the client feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and uplifted.
